Physio tape, which also is know as kinesiology tape or K-tape, is a fantastic way to help with many issues in relation to joints, muscles, fascia and connective tissues.

There are very few contraindications for use, which means that it is a safe form of treatment, with the added bonus of being drug free!

Below I explain how Physio Tape works and what benefits is provide.

Pain Relief

Although physio tape contains no medications or topical substances, it can effectively relieve both acute and chronic pain.

Its elasticity lifts the skin slightly, which immediately reduces pressure on sensitive pain receptors under the skin.

In addition, its stimulating effect on pain pathways provides a competitive stimulus that blocks pain signals going to the brain.

Improve Circulation

If you’ve been injured, physio tape might help improve circulation and reduce swelling in the area where you’re hurt.

It may also improve circulation of lymphatic fluids. Lymphatic fluid is mostly water, but it also contains proteins, bacteria, and other chemicals. The lymphatic system is the way your body regulates swelling and fluid build-up.

The theory is that when kinesiology tape is applied, it creates extra subcutaneous space, which changes the pressure gradient in the area underneath your skin. That change in pressure enhances the flow of lymphatic fluid.

Reduce Swelling

Physio tape has been shown to reduce swelling and inflammation. Reduced pressure on the lymphatic drainage channels enhances removal of fluids and other materials that collect in an injured area.

This applies not only to sports injuries, but also to post-surgical recovery and other inflammatory conditions, including lymphedema (severe swelling of the extremities.)

Support Muscles

Physio tape supports injured muscles and joints without restricting range of motion. The unique elastic properties and application techniques of the tape allow it to provide support to injured muscles or joints.

Speed Up Recovery

Physio taping helps speed up recovery in physical therapy patients and has quickly become the preferred choice of treatment options for sports therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists and others.

The original applications of the tape have not only been met by but have been exceeded by the growing applications available for the usage and treatment of various ailments. People from all across the globe are asking to be treated with physio tape for their pain and injuries. Some are even asking for it in order to improve their overall performance and improve their muscle strength and mobility.

Physical therapy patients can agree that since starting the treatments the majority experienced a decrease in pain, swelling, and have shown an increase in movement and mobility.

Prevents Cramps and Spasms

Enhanced circulation improves delivery of oxygen and nutrients to overused or fatigued muscles, helping to prevent or relieve spasms and cramps.

Enhances Strength and Muscle Tone in Weak or Poorly-Toned Muscles

Certain neurological or muscular disorders can make muscles so weak that it is almost impossible to do the exercises that are critical to improve daily functioning. Physio tape not only provides support to these muscles, but it can also improve muscle activation, allowing therapeutic exercises to be carried out more effectively.

One of the major uses in this category is with infants and young children with hypotonia, poor muscle tone that limits their ability to learn to sit up, crawl, etc. A simple application of physio tape can improve posture and assist in mobility.

Allows Full Range of Motion

A huge benefit of physio tape is the ability of the tape to allow full range of motion. It isn’t restrictive in any way.

The unique elastic properties and application techniques of kinesiology tape allow it to provide support to injured muscles or joints without restricting range of motion.

Because of these unrestrictive properties of physio tape it means that the patient can remain active whilst using this form of therapy.

Movement has also proved to be beneficial to recovery, blood flow, circulation and healing when suffering these ‘non-serious’ injuries.

One application, if done correctly, could last up to 5 days!

This doesn’t mean you have to go without a shower for 5 days. You can shower normally, and with just a little extra care, you should be able to get a few days out of each application.
